This is an urgent problem and we must find alternatives to lithium-ion batteries. Thus, many revolutionary and promising batteries have been born one after another.
First off, a startup in Texas, US Bemp Research Corp, has proposed using hemp to make alternative batteries – using lightweight and abundant materials such as sulfur, boron, and carbonized hemp – instead of heavy metals such as nickel and cobalt. Sulfur and Boron are very abundant with the biggest boron mine being in California. They also have a strategic partnership with Delta Agriculture, the biggest hemp producer in the USA.
Hemp pulp costs between $500 and $1,000 per ton, a price much lower than that of lithium, which costs approximately $80,000 per ton. If we do the math, this means that the raw material to produce this new energy product would be between 80 – 100 times cheaper than that of a lithium battery at about $0.55 per kWh.
Hemp batteries can be fully charged in 3 minutes and will still have double the gravimetric energy density of the best Li-ion batteries. This means doubling or tripling the range per charge for electric vehicles. They estimate their batteries will be good for 100,000 miles being fast-charged.
A hemp battery’s span of life is 70 years, which is 3 times longer than lithium-ion. They plan to mass-produce these batteries before 2026. The first applications will be for drones and heavy-duty electric vehicles such as buses and trucks.
The second battery we want to present uses carbon nanotube technology. A French company claims that it has developed what it’s calling an “ultra-fast electrode” that improves power by a factor of 10, and lifecycle by up to a factor of five, all while reducing charge time to a mere few minutes.
NAWA’s new electrode, which is based on its patented Vertically-Aligned Carbon Nanotube (VACNT) IP, combines ionic conductivity with high electrical and thermal conductivity. This is enabled thanks to its 3D fully accessible nanostructure and an arrangement of 100 billion nanotubes per square centimeter, all of which are aligned vertically.
NAWA believes that its new Ultra Fast Carbon Electrode could bring significant cost savings. The estimated price is only about $30 per kWh.
