The race to develop more advanced electric vehicle batteries has been dubbed the “next gold rush.” Numerous new technologies are on the horizon that may make it more affordable to own and operate a zero-emission vehicle. “Range anxiety” and “long charging times” may soon be a thing of the past, as battery packs could soon give over 400 miles of range between charges, charge in a matter of seconds, and may even power the car wirelessly.
The world aims to move towards zero emission and environment friendly vehicles but there are certain obstacles. Electric vehicles are still not cheap enough and only a handful of classes are able to afford them. Another question that arises in mind is the reliability of batteries and the time it would take to charge a vehicle. However, many companies are working towards producing cost effective, reliable, and fast charging batteries. On the other hand, the demand for EVs is also increasing day by day. According to market research firm Auto Pacific, electric vehicle sales in America will quadruple in the next five years, rising from 2% of vehicle sales today to around 7% in 2026. Demand for improved and more affordable EV batteries is igniting a new gold rush as university research teams, start-up companies, and automakers race to develop novel technologies and meet demand.
The objective is to produce improved electric vehicle batteries that charge more quickly and last longer while using less expensive and ecologically friendly materials.
While cost and range are critical considerations when purchasing an electric vehicle (EV), waiting hours to charge your EV is another significant hurdle on the road to EV ownership. “How long does it take to charge?” is one of the most frequently asked questions by non-EV owners. What if an electric vehicle’s battery could be recharged in less than ten minutes? Would that cause you to reconsider? However, some intriguing battery innovations from firms such as Battery Streak may be bringing this fantasy closer to reality than you think.
